ISO 50001: Energy management at the heart
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is a highly-regarded internationally recognised standard developed to provide all types of non-domestic organisations (including SMEs) with a framework to manage and improve energy performance.
The standard places energy management at the heart of an organisation by addressing energy usage, procurement strategies and the development of an energy management system (EnMS) that implements energy best practice across entire business operations.
ISO 50001 operates on the basis of continual improvement. The flexibility of the framework allows an organisation to set and pursue its own targets for improving energy performance.
Accreditation can take on average between six to twelve months and is valid for a 3 year period.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits to adopting ISO 50001. They include:
> Sending a positive message to key stakeholders regarding your commitment to the environment and sustainability through eliminating energy waste;
> A route to ESOS compliance, negating the need to repeat ESOS in 4 yearly cycles (ESOS phase 2 compliance deadline being 05 December 2019);
> Reducing carbon emissions whilst meeting government targets;
> Identifying and managing your future energy supply risks; and
> Reducing energy consumption and bills.
